Thanks to a state law passed in 2015 co-sponsored by the Teamsters, big health insurance companies that sell plans to large group purchasers (like Union trust funds and other plans 856 members participate in) must disclose the underlying claims (or aggregated) data used to calculate premiums. In other words, the insurance industry must justify their rates based on real data instead of setting prices arbitrarily.
The law also requires yearly public hearings on insurance rates, presenting a unique opportunity for us to stand together and show the insurance industry that we’re sick of skyrocketing health care costs eating into our paychecks.
The first of these hearings will be held in San Francisco in February. Members of Teamsters 856 will be attending as a group and we hope you can join us — the more of us who stand together, the more of an impact we can make.
