The terms of Local 856 members’ healthcare are negotiated for and outlined in their collective bargaining agreement or contract. Plans that provide for major medical, dental, vision, life and prescription drugs are provided through the Teamsters Local 856 Health & Welfare Trust Fund, other Taft-Hartley Plans as well as employer-sponsored plans.

Teamsters Local 856 Health & Welfare Trust Fund

Members who have a collective bargaining agreement that includes health coverage under the Teamsters Local Union No. 856 Health & Welfare Trust Fund may contact the Fund at:

Trust Fund Structure: The Teamsters Local 856 Trust Fund is governed by federal laws and regulations through the U.S. Department of Labor. It is a Taft-Hartley Trust Fund which requires a governing body called the Board of Trustees with an equal number of Union and Employer Trustees. The Board engages the professional services of a Third Party Administrator (Northwest Administrators, Inc.), a Plan Consultant (Rael and Letson), an Auditor (Reuben E. Price & Co., CPAs), Legal Counsel (Carroll & Scully).

Teamsters Assistance Program (T.A.P.)

TAP provides eligible union members and their families with assessment, referral, and follow-up services for alcohol and drug-related job and personal issues. TAP also provides limited EAP services for stress, anger management and critical incident debriefing.

Retirement Security

Teamsters 856 members participate in various retirement security plans ranging from the Western Conference of Teamster Pension Plan, to public sector pension plans such as CalPERS or 1937 Act Plans, and/or 401(k) plans. Please consult your collective bargaining agreement or contact your representative to determine which plan applies to you.


Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Plan (WCTP)

The WCTP is the largest multi-employer pension plan in the United States. It covers 200,000 active participants through pension agreements negotiated by Teamster local unions with more than 1,600 employers predominantly in 13 western states. Most of Local 856’s members in the private sector participate in the WCTP.

Retirement in the Public Sector

CALPERS
Most Local 856 members working in the public sector participate in CALPERS.
Under CALPERS, both members and the public entities that employ them, contribute to the Plan.

1937 Act Plans
Other public sector agencies may have what is known as a 1937 Act Plan. These Plans are offered by various County governments under the jurisdiction of Local 856. Please consult your collective bargaining agreement or contact your representative to determine which plan applies to you.


401(k)s and other Employer-Sponsored Plans

Members may participate in 401(k) and other employer-sponsored collectively bargained retirement plans. Please consult your collective bargaining agreement or contact your representative to determine if such a plan is available to you.

In addition, some contracts include a Teamster pension as well as a supplemental 401(k) plan through New York Life/401(k). If your contract contains this supplemental plan, you may call 1 800 477 3829 for more information.
