This month, more than 1,700 Contra Costa County workers joined Teamsters Local 856 in a landslide vote. Eighty-five percent of workers in the Health Services, General Maintenance and Services, and Licensed Vocational Nurse/Aide Units casting ballots chose Teamster representation, with more than two-thirds of eligible employees participating in the election.
“The high participation level in the election and overwhelming vote in favor of the Teamsters is a loud statement that things need to change at the County,” said Teamsters Local 856 Principal Officer Peter Finn, who will chair the upcoming contract negotiations for the three units.
“The strong vote result is an important first step in our fight to ensure the valuable work done by County workers for the communities they serve throughout Contra Costa is recognized. We are committed to using all the resources necessary to make that happen,” Finn continued.
Contra Costa Teamsters serve the public throughout the County staffing hospitals, clinics and mental health facilities as well as maintaining essential public infrastructure and safety.
The addition of Contra Costa County employees to Teamster 856 brings the Local to over 10,000 members for the first time in its 67-year history.
