Nearly 100 stewards attended the 6th annual Shop Steward Appreciation Day on October 3 in San Francisco.

On October 3, Teamsters 856 held its 6th annual shop steward appreciation event at the San Francisco Hilton Union Square. Nearly 100 stewards turned out for the event, which included workshops presented by Attorney David Rosenfeld on the roles and rights of Union stewards and California Labor Federation Communications Specialist Rachel Johnson on how Union members can fight negative attacks on working families.

State Senator Mike McGuire, West Hollywood Mayor Lindsey Horvath, and Former San Francisco Board of Supervisors President and current candidate Aaron Peskin also stopped by to speak to the attendees about what is being done politically at the local and state level to fight the so-called “sharing” economy’s systematic stripping of workers’ rights.

The day concluded with several stewards receiving awards in recognition of their extraordinary work over the past year:

Nancy Briggs, Mark Hopkins Hotel — Distinguished Service Award
Debra Caison, UPS — Volunteer Activist Award
Annette Losada, Hertz Car Rental — Tenacity Award
Mount Diablo Unified School District Steward Team — Unity Award
Brandon Ransburg, Alameda County Probation — Solidarity Award

A huge thanks to all the stewards who gave up their Saturday to further their education and attend this event — you are what makes Steward Appreciation Day such a success each year!
