Through the political process, Unions have fought and won:

Overtime;
The weekend;
Family Medical Leave Act;
The 40-hour work week;
Social Security;
Worker’s compensation;
and other basic labor rights.

Labor unions are also the only major group left that is continuing to protect these basics rights that big business is fighting to take away from us.

As Teamsters 856 members, politics impacts our day-to-day lives.  In the public sector, City Councils, Board of Supervisors, and Hospital Boards vote on our contract and budgets that affect our jobs. In the private sector, elected officials will vote on special funding, laws, rules and regulations that can alter our working conditions.
